What is SPIFF in sales?

A SPIFF is a short-term sales bonus paid for a specific result, such as selling a new product or closing a deal before the quarter ends. The letters usually stand for sales performance incentive fund. It sits on top of normal commission, runs for a fixed window and pays a set amount for each qualifying sale, so sellers focus on one priority.

The short answer

Key takeaways

  • A SPIFF rewards one specific result for a short, fixed period.
  • It is paid on top of commission, usually as a flat amount per qualifying sale.
  • Clear written rules and quick payment make a SPIFF work.
  • Used too often, SPIFFs train sellers to wait for the next one.

How does a SPIFF work

A sales leader picks one result they want more of, sets a reward for each qualifying sale and announces a fixed window in which it applies. Sellers earn the reward on top of their normal commission, and it is paid soon after the window closes.

Here is an invented example. A software company launches a reporting add-on and wants it in front of existing customers quickly. It offers £200 for every add-on sold on a deal signed between 1 July and 30 September, paid with October's salary, with the rules written on one page and shared before the start.

What is the difference between a SPIFF and a commission

Commission is the ongoing part of a seller's pay, usually a share of the value of every deal; a SPIFF is a short, extra reward for one behaviour or product. Commission rewards selling in general all year. A SPIFF redirects attention for a few weeks towards something the business needs now.

Because it is extra, a SPIFF should never be the main reason a seller earns well. If it is, the commission plan itself needs fixing.

When should you use a SPIFF

Use a SPIFF when you need a specific, short-term change in what sellers focus on. Typical moments are below.

  • Launching a new product or add-on that sellers have not yet learned to sell.
  • Moving stalled deals that have sat in late stages for too long.
  • Encouraging longer contracts or annual payment upfront.
  • Opening a new segment, such as booking first meetings in a new industry.
  • Clearing excess stock, for teams that sell physical products.

How do you design a fair SPIFF

A fair SPIFF has one clear goal, a qualifying rule nobody can argue about and a reward every eligible seller has a real chance to earn. Write down what counts, such as the deal must be signed and invoiced in the window, and what does not, such as deals already agreed before it started.

Keep the window short, a few weeks to a quarter, and pay promptly so the link between effort and reward stays clear. Make the reward worth chasing but small next to commission, and add a clawback rule if a qualifying deal is cancelled soon after.

What can go wrong with a SPIFF

The biggest risk is that sellers change their behaviour in ways you did not intend. Deals get pulled forward into the window and the next month looks empty, or sellers push the SPIFF product to customers who do not need it.

Other problems are easier to prevent: a SPIFF only some sellers can earn breeds resentment, vague rules lead to disputes, and running one every quarter teaches the team to hold deals back until the next one starts.

Clear answers

Common questions

What does SPIFF stand for?

It is usually expanded as sales performance incentive fund, and sometimes as special performance incentive for field force. Both mean the same short-term sales bonus.

Are SPIFFs taxable?

In most places a SPIFF paid by an employer is treated as earnings and taxed like other pay. Check the rules that apply to you with your payroll team or an accountant.

Who pays for a SPIFF?

Usually the seller's own employer. In channel sales, a manufacturer or software vendor sometimes funds a SPIFF for a reseller's sellers to promote its product.

How long should a SPIFF run?

Long enough for a deal to be won inside it, and short enough to feel urgent. For most teams that means a few weeks to one quarter.
