What is go-to-market (GTM)?

Go-to-market (GTM) is how a company brings a product to the customers who will buy it: who it sells to, what it offers them, how it reaches them and how it wins and keeps their business. The term covers both the plan and the teams that carry it out, usually marketing, sales, customer success and the operations behind them.

The short answer

Key takeaways

  • Go-to-market covers the target customer, the offer, the channels and the way you sell.
  • A GTM motion is the main way a company wins customers, such as sales-led or product-led.
  • The GTM team is everyone who markets, sells to or looks after customers.
  • GTM applies to every launch, new market and new segment, not only a company's first product.

What does go-to-market include

Go-to-market includes every decision between a finished product and a paying customer. A useful way to check you have covered it is to ask whether each of these has a clear answer and an owner.

  • Market: which segment you serve first, described in an ideal customer profile.
  • Problem and positioning: what you solve for them and why you, not the alternatives.
  • Pricing and packaging: how you charge and what each plan includes.
  • Channels: how buyers find you, from search and content to outbound and partners.
  • Sales motion: how a buyer goes from interest to signed contract.
  • Customer success: how customers get value and stay.

What is a go-to-market motion

A go-to-market motion is the main route by which a company wins customers. In a sales-led motion, salespeople guide buyers through demos and proposals. In a product-led motion, people try the product themselves and buy inside it. Partner-led and community-led motions rely on others to bring buyers in.

Most companies run a blend. A product-led company might add a sales team for its largest accounts, and a sales-led company might add a free version to fill the top of the pipeline.

Who is on a go-to-market team

A go-to-market team is everyone who markets to, sells to or looks after customers, plus the people who run their systems. That usually means marketing, sales development, account executives, customer success and revenue operations, often with product marketing joining the dots between product and market.

Newer roles have joined it too. GTM engineers build the data flows and automations that connect the team's tools, and many teams now work alongside AI assistants for research and first drafts.

What is an example of go-to-market

Take an invented company launching an online booking tool for physiotherapy clinics. Its go-to-market says: start with independent clinics of two to ten therapists in the UK, position the tool as fewer missed appointments rather than as software, offer a monthly plan per clinic, reach owners through physiotherapy associations and targeted email, and let them sign up and try it before a short onboarding call.

Common questions

What does GTM stand for?

GTM stands for go-to-market: the plan and the teams that bring a product to its customers. You will also see it in GTM strategy, GTM team and GTM engineer.

Is go-to-market only for new products?

No. Entering a new country, targeting a new segment or changing your pricing each needs its own go-to-market thinking, even for a product that has sold for years.

Who owns go-to-market in a company?

Ultimately the chief executive, with marketing, sales and customer success leaders each owning their part. In larger companies a chief revenue officer often owns it day to day.
